DESIGN IDEAS COMPETITION
Architecture should display a regional identity. This should be handled through design and a strong use of local materials, which would aide in one of the simplest aspects of “Green Design” The concept looks to give Entry Level Residential Architecture a voice in Portland, while at the same time confronting restrictions of the program.
The form is simple in order to draw upon our primal notions of shelter. This allows the design to be contemporary, while also seeming familiar and welcoming. The garage door is clad in the same primary material of the house, when closed it blends into the façade. It can serve as a shelter for a vehicle or as a covered gathering area, opening itself to the neighborhood.
Interior Spaces are open, in order to make small spaces feel larger. Public moves to private by vertical separation in further attempts to keep the spaces open. Environmentally Efficient Design strategies would be employed to all possible extents, allowing the residence to give back, instead of primarily taking.
